- Professor Phillips is a Colorectal Surgeon with a tertiary referral practice in inflammatory bowel disease, inherited cancer and anal fistula. He became Clinical Director of St Mark's in 2004.
- Professor Phillips has a national and international reputation, between 2005-10 delivering many keynote lectures: Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Lecturer; Daher Cutait Lecturer, Brazilian Society of Coloproctology; Gold Medal, Danish Surgical Society; 19th Buie Visiting Professor, Mayo Clinic, USA; Ernestine Hambrick Lecturer, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons; David Jagelman Visiting Professor, Cleveland Clinic, USA.
- Between 2003-2010 he (co-)supervised 7 MD/PhD theses awarded, 3 in preparation, 74 peer- reviewed articles (52 polyposis) some clinical, others basic science (25), 7 book chapters and co-edited 3 books.
- He became Honorary Administrative Co-Director of Insight (the International Society for the Investigation of Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumours) in 2003, jointly responsible for a worldwide patient register, membership, and with biennial international meetings (San Antonio, Texas, 2011).
