Willem Bemelman Graduated from Medical School at the University of Amsterdam in 1986. From 1986 until 1988 he worked as a research resident at the department of Surgical Research at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. From 1988 – 1994 he was trained as a surgical resident (Dr. J.N. Keeman and Prof. H. Obertop) in the St Lucas Andreas Hospital and Academic Medical Center. In 1989 he achieved his PhD at the University of Amsterdam entitled “esophageal reconstruction with the stomach”.
In 1994 he worked as a fellow in Gastrointestinal surgery at the Department of Surgery in the Academic Medical Center. From 1995 until 1999 he worked as a consultant at the department of surgery at the Leiden University Medical Center, responsible for the benign gastrointestinal surgery, in particular Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
From 1999 until now he works at the department of Surgery of the Academic Medical Center responsible for the Minimally Invasive and Colorectal Surgery with special interest in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In 2006 he became a professor in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
