Dr B.L.A.M. Weusten (1967) has been appointed Professor by Special Appointment of Innovative Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of the St. Antonius Hospital Foundation.
Bas Weusten is a senior gastroenterologist at St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein and the Academic Medical Centre (AMC). He obtained his doctorate in 1995 from Utrecht University on the subject of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and oesophageal motility. His clinical work focuses on, among others things, the treatment of patients with early forms of oesophageal and gastric cancer. Other key areas of Weusten's work include therapeutic endoscopy and gastrointestinal motility.
Weusten's scientific work focuses specifically on the development and improvement of new endoscopic treatment possibilities for early-stage oesophageal and gastric cancer. This mainly concerns endoscopic techniques for tissue resection and tissue ablation. Weusten is also chairman of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Department of the Dutch Society for Gastroenterology (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Gastroenterologie). He has published in various scientific journals, including Gastroenterology, Gut, American Journal of Physiology, and Endoscopy.
